Unifying a division helps, if you don't move up a division it at least shows total domination over your own weight class. Kostya Tszyu was an example of this. Of course the opposition of the opponents are a major factor but, generally, unifying the titles of the "big three" will mean you have had to face at least one other "elite" fighter.

Hopkins had Trinidad, Tszyu had Judah, Winky had Mosley & Lewis had Holyfield. Unification is still a good thing.
