View Full Version : Just Re-started training - few questions
Initially learned to box when I was 12 or 13, stopped afterabout a year (when I started drinking) did a bit more when I was 17 or 18 and then stopped completely when I went to uni nearly 10 years ago!
Anyway, I've recently started training again, just to get fit and have some fun but I have a quick question.
Been playing the guitar for years and do a lot of recording. I dont want boxing to affect guitar playing. Anyone else in this position, how can I minimise the chances of doing my hands any damage?

your hands arent as much at risk as your wrists are. Wrap them snuggly but not tight, and make sure you wear gloves that protect your wrist. Many gloves have a lot of padding on the knuckles but not have only a crease at the wrist. this will kill your wrists after hitting the pads for a long while.
No offense or anything, but you probably dont hit hard enough or have heated enough battles to hurt your hands.

No offense taken, its just a concern and you've made me feel a lot better about it. I dont want one hobby to affect another hobby.
I don't plan on being in any particularly "heated battles" anyway. I just want to get fit and have some fun sparing. I'll just make sure I wrap my hands properly. I'm just using stinky club gloves at the mo but when I get a bit better I'll take it into consideration when buying a set of gloves.

Yeah, you use all the articulation in your fingers when playing.

make sure your hands are taped properly,it is very important because if you hurt your knuckle you may not be able to strum, and the importance of a good guitar player is good strumming,
