I'm very unfamiliar with both of them. Of course I've looked at their records, but has anybody either read about their styles or seen them directly on film?
Where do they rank at lightweight in an accomplishment sense and head to head sense? |

I actually have Brown in my top 10 at lightweight, not too sure how right that is though, i might push him outside of it! Carter was managed by the mob i believe, he would look terrible apparently in bouts, and then dethroned Ike Williams! I dont have him anywhere near my top guys at the weight though, havent actually seen Carter fight.

Alos , in a h2h sense, it would probably depend, in Brown's case, if the title was on the line, in his over the weight non-title defenses he seemed to be disinterested from what i can gather, i dont like to make excuse for fighters losin, but he seemed different in title fights. In h2h instances though, it may be right to always consider a guy at his best, or you could take him on average overall of his performances?

I hope the mob story is correct on Jimmy Carter teeto, because from what I've seen he didn't look great, and I've seen a couple of his fights. Both of which were wins.
I don't understand how he could've beaten Ike Williams from what I've seen. |

From the story i read, i gathered that he was supposedly a good fighter who took dives for the mob and when he was allowed to perform to his potential he beat Williams! Maybe that was wrong then and it was Williams that took the dive? It was a while ago i read it, think it was in the Ring.
I know what you're saying though, from what i can muster, he wasnt o Williams' leve at all. |

Well here's footage of him. He looks better than I remember actually. He is flawed technically in that he leaves himself open after he throws punches, mostly from mid-range, but he clearly has thunderous power on the inside, even if they are in single blows and he is being outworked for most of the fight. While he's open defensively to counters, he shows decent bob and weave skills on making his way inside at times.
I'd like to see his fight with Williams, both seem the type to pick their big shots on the inside until they land something big, and then they go off. Williams was just the better boxer and the more explosive of the two. I believe Williams was past his prime by the time the fight took place though. Just watched it then Sweet Pea, i know its not much footage to go off, but from what i saw i think- Carter doesnt seem to have much of a defence, and for a good bit, doesnt seem to have much of an inside game in general, unless he hurts his opponent with (as you say) a single mid-range shot, and then when that happens, he seems to be a good finisher, or he dertainly finishd that one well. Bit of a gambler though, counting on that gameplan and getting hit with plenty of shots in the process. I know Williams was similar, but he was a great lightweight who was more explosive and seemed to have a better inside game generally imo.

Carter was an excellent finisher when he had his man on the way out.... when he had you reeling he usually finished you off in short order. As for Joe he had that good long jab of his and the follow up right hand was murder if he landed it right on the kisser. Both men could and were taken out legitimately though in some fights, but at their best they would be a handful for any lightweight that ever lived in my opinion. |

If so I did indeed get it and replied, but I didn`t hear back from you though although if you were banned now I know why. Why were you banned btw? Of all the idiots on that site that are ban worthy why did you get kicked off? On a seperate note how many of your dvds have you had the chance to watch so far? Did you finally get around to sitting down and watching Chacon/Limon IV? |

As for modern boxing I don`t really post my thoughts on todays fights or fighters very often because I don`t follow modern boxing all that much really, I`m more interested in viewing my own footage from previous eras. But I will chime in once in awhile, but you`ll mainly see me in the classic section as that is where my interest lies along with anything to do with fighters from the Orient. |
