This is going to sound like a stupid question, because its very opinion based and relies on a lot of factors, but when does a fighter get consideration for being placed on the ATG list? Formulas never really work, but if you had to put a formula, or label on it, what would it be? After "X" amount of belts in different weight classes, "X" amount of title defenses, "X" amount of wins against top 10 guys, etc....

I knew Ottke would come up. LOL. I myself don't really have much of an atg list (yet), so I guess I was just curious if you guys have a general idea of when someone is really close to cracking it. Ya know, something like multiple titles in 3-4 different weight classes, or 10 title defenses with 4 coming against #1 ranked guys, etc

Don't know that there is a formula per say. I do think that certain things get you in automatically. Total domination over other ATG's will certainly gain you consideration (if the ATG are in or near their primes). Domination of a deep division or multiple divisions will put a fighter into that league as well.

Unifying a division helps, if you don't move up a division it at least shows total domination over your own weight class. Kostya Tszyu was an example of this. Of course the opposition of the opponents are a major factor but, generally, unifying the titles of the "big three" will mean you have had to face at least one other "elite" fighter.
Hopkins had Trinidad, Tszyu had Judah, Winky had Mosley & Lewis had Holyfield. Unification is still a good thing. |
