Re: What fight/fights did you watch today?

I watched the following fights today:

George Chuvalo vs Doug Jones (good fight, lots of action but Jones gets the worst of things throughout. Brave stand by Jones who stood his ground with the stronger man in Chuvao for eleven punishing rounds before succumbing)

George Chuvalo vs Ernie Terrell (Scored it today and had it for Chuvalo by a point, close and hard fight to score though so I have no qualms with the official decision)

Ernie Terrell vs Doug Jones (One-sided fight in favour or Terrell, he really controlled him with the jab from the outside and used his superior physical strenght in close to bully him around and slow him down with vicious uppercuts and hooks to the midsection, nearly had Jones out of there in the second round.)

Curtis Parker vs Dwight Davison (Parker off to a fast start winning the first three rounds outright, then Davison starts finding a home for that overhand right of his and slows down Parker`s attack with some damaging uppercuts to the midsection too and besides a bried rally by Parker in the 9th round he loses every round from the 3rd onward.)

Curtis Parker vs Tony Braxton (Dwight Qawi/Braxton`s brother Tony gives a good effort and lands some punishing blows on Curtis throughout the fight, but Parker`s higher punch output and Braxton`s running out of steam late costs him the decision in an entertaining affair.)

It was a great, high paced, high skilled fight though.
I had it 143-142 for Buchanan

Laguna winning rounds 1,2,3,5,10,11 and 13.

Buchanan winning rounds 4,6,7,8,12,14(10-8) and 15.

    Round 9 being even.

I re-watched it and had Buchanan by 2. That was definitely not a 10-5 fight. Ken looked the worse for wear but I think he earned the decision.

Raging Bull, would that Parker - Davison fight by any chance be an NBC telecast? I think I remember that fight being on an NBC Friday night fights series they ran for a little while. I think most of us hard core fans can remember where they watched a lot of these fights. I watched Davison - Parker at my grandparents. I'll put it on my next list if you have it ;-)

Wilfred Benitez and Ayub Kalule vs the talented and completely forgotten Emiliano Villa.

Watched the Benitez fight on youtube and went back to the kalule fight to see if my memories of the two performances were the same.

Both great technical fights, but the Kalule fight really showed what a monster he cuold be if he had someone in front of him just looking to methodically pit their technical skills against him.Just insane timing, punch accuracy and countering against a talented, technically skilled opponent.

Watched Ralph "Tiger" Jones beat Sugar Ray Robinson. Not one of Ray's better performances. It's impressive how many great fights he had after this one.

Watched (for at least the 30th time) Donald Curry vs Milt McCrory. This is one of the sharpest performances I've ever seen. I think Curry on that night would've given any of the great welterweights a helluva fight.

    Watched these fights yesterday:

Rex Layne vs Cesar Brion (sloppy yet entertaining battle, Brion shoulda got the nod though as he used a good jab from mid-range and was landing a lot of good punches to the body whenever they got in a clinch.)

Joe Frazier vs Buster Mathis (Joe just chopped him down like a tree, but Buster gave as good as he got for the first five rounds or so.)

Joey Giardello vs Randy Sandy (Sharp performance by Joey G and a spirited one by Sandy who was on the comeback trail after spending a year in the service, good fight.)

Curtis Parker vs Willie Monroe (The young Parker was simply too busy and aggressive for the ringwise veteran Monroe who while clearly past it still had some shining moments in what was otherwise a one-sided affair.)

Alfredo Marcano vs Kenji Iwata (Marcano defends his title against a brave but outgunned opponent in Iwata. He was in control from the start and had Iwata down five times altogether, twice in the 3rd and three times in the 4th, the jap got back up each time and fought back gamely but was simply overmatched.)

Whitaker vs Ramirez 1 and 2. Both were one-sided fights. But of course the first one was a robbery in Paris France. This was the original ABC edition for both fights.

I also watched Raf Marquez vs Mark too sharp Johnson 2. This fight ended in the 8th. Marquez won by KO

I watched Mayweather vs Castillo rematch, very good underrated fight IMO.

Re: What fight/fights did you watch today?

Today I saw Alexis Arguello against Eziquiel Sanchez from 1977, two days after he'd abdicated his featherweight crown. It was a sign of things to come at 130, as he tore the Dominican apart with horrendous body shots and alternated with rights to the head. Vintage performance. KO4.

I also finally saw Pedroza vs. Lockridge I, which is now on youtube as of last week, along with Pedroza's matches against Hong, Lastra, and Johnny Aba.

The Lockridge fight was a squirrely decision, and while I'm not one to bang the corruption drum too often, this one stunk. Pedroza fought with little spark, and only turned it on in the final third of the fight. I thought the fight was quite close, having Lockridge up by a point at the end, but the ref had him up by eight I think and the Panamanian judge had Pedroza up by a totally inexplicable ten points. Unfathomable. It took them forever to collect the scorecards, all the while Pedroza looking by dispassionately and disinterested, and finally Gil Clancy told Tim Ryan "this seems awfully strange."

Indeed it was. I'm completely sure the two officials were on the take that day (Lockridge's hometown, no less).

Disgraceful scoring by the ref and the Panamanian goon.

One has to feel for Rocky, he had so many close decisions go against him in his career. Whilst I had this fight a draw, I wouldn't complain if Rocky got the nod and it probably would have went some way to vindicating him for all the close decisions that went against him in his career.

Yeah, that's the thing; had Pedroza taken it by a point or even two on the cards it wouldn't have been that big a deal. That's feasible. But the scores as they were were blatantly corrupt. They weren't even subtle about it.

Re: What fight/fights did you watch today?

I watched the following fights yesterday:

Bob Baker W10 Nino Valdes II
(Good fight. After a competitive start by Valdes which saw the fight even after three rounds on my card, Baker took over matters from the 4th round onward and won the fight handily from that point onwards. He controlled Valdes with his jab and effective left hooks and uppercuts in close, Valdes fought back effectively at times but his rallys were few and far between. Had a great long jab though the Cuban did, shame he neglected to use it far too often.)

    Rex Layne L10 Roland LaStarza
(Layne got off to a fast start, winning three of the first four rounds on my card, but he seemed to tire by the 5th round and from then on it was mostly LaStarza`s bout as he controlled the distance with his jab and landed effective counters until the final bell.)

Rex Layne KO4 Dave Whitlock IV
(Now much to say about this one, Whitlock was backpedalling the entire time and rarely engaged Layne who was much the stronger man whenever they go in close. Layen flattened him with a left hook in the 4th sending him crashing to the mat face first.)

Rex Layne KO6 Young Harry Wills
(Layne clearly the stronger man here, kept bullying and pinning Wills on the ropes for long stretches of time and really worked over his ribs good in close. Layne while not a adonis physique wise was nonetheless clearly a very strong man, he had a very wide skeletal structure and build and with his powerful thighs and calves he could really get some good leverage into his punches, had he learned to punch straight and with better technique he coulda gone further than he did.)

    Mando Muniz L10 Raul Soriano
(Soriano the battle tested veteran sprung the upset on a young up and coming Muniz in very entertaining and hard fought contest. Muniz seemed to be trying too hard in there and threw himself off balance often due to Soriano`s effective and clever footwork. Soriano would also always without fail land a solid left hook/uppercut hybrid on Muniz whenever they got in a clinch and he landed it with impunity all night. He also demonstrated a accurate jab that he used to good effect to keep the young Muniz tentative from long range. Muniz got thru with some heavy leather in spurts throughout the fight and especially in the 9th when he really rung Raul`s bell and landed some monstrous shots on him but could not manage to put his teak tough opponent away.)

    Mando Muniz LTKO6 Ray Leonard
(Muniz by this point a shell of his former self and it showed, Ray won the fight easily and landed some thunderous punches on Mando. To his credit though Muniz did fight back courageously and managed to land some good body punches on Ray here and there, but there was just no way he was gonna win this one atb this stage of his career no matter how hard he tried.)

    Mando Muniz L10 Angel Espada
(Only have a 5 minute highlight of this bout, but from the looks of it it seemed like a fast paced fight with lots of good exchanges throughout. Espada boxed beautifully at times in there behind his jab but then Muniz would land a good solid blow and stun him and back him into the ropes for a little bit before Angel managed to escape back to centre ring and go back to boxing from long range.)

    Pipino Cuevas KO3 Sammy Garcia
(Pipino was all of 17 years old here, and I gotta say he fought quite differently at this stage of his career than he did later on as reigning champ. In this bout he boxed on the backfoot and made use of his jab much more and right hand, he had a good bounce in his step too and was looking rather fleetfooted in there. He caught up to Garcia in the 3rd as he was pinned against the ropes by him and then out of nowhere he landed a huge right hand that sent Garcia tumbling backwards to the mat. He got back up at nine and right away Pipino swarmed all over him and backed him to the ropes and dropped him again with a left this time. Garcia gets up one last time and Pipino jumps all over him again and finally ends matters with a huge overhand right on the jaw that knocks Garcia out cold and drops him on his face.)

I just noticed this post of yours bud, and to answer your question it is indeed an NBC telecast and its in good condition too. Say, if you have updated your list some more since you last sent it to me do send it again, we`ll work out a small trade in the next few weeks and that way you can get a hold of the Davison/Parker bout along with some other ones of your choosing.

Re: What fight/fights did you watch today?

Watched these three fights this morning:

Curtis Parker L10 Mustafa Hamsho I
(Curtis got robbed in this fight. I had him CLEARLY winning 7 rounds to Hamsho`s three and at best you can make a case for maybe, just mayyybe one more round for Hamsho which would still make him a loser by one round. The first four rounds were competitive with Hamsho winning two of them, but by the 4th round Curtis really started landing some good and heavy blows on Mustafa`s noggin that forced him to hold on several times. Mustafa mounted a brief rally in the 8th round but lost the remaining two rounds clearly and the fight as well.)

Curtis Parker L10 Mustafa Hamsho II
(This fight I had Hamsho winning legitimately, although it was still close as I scored it 6-3-1 in Hamsho`s favour. He employed a lot more body punching in this fight than he did in their first bout which slowed down Parker considerably by the last three rounds, and he also landed some sneaky low blows on Parker early on that seemed to have a telling effect on him as the fight progressed.)

    Mickey Ward TKO10 Reggie Green
(Very entertaining fight. Ward falls behind early on and gets his bell rung but good in the 3rd or 4th round and is on the verge of being stopped only to get saved by the bell. He then starts to slowly get back into the fight and by the last two rounds Mickey`s bode punches have taken their toll and Green is much slower on his feet and you can see he is hurting. Ward finally gets him out of there with a spirited rally in the tenth and final round to end matters with about 30 seconds left in the fight.)
