No pain in the ankle during or after the race, thankfully.

Next up is an 10K race in mid June and maybe another 10K towards the end of the month. Still building up slowly to a late summer half marathon.

Nice! In a way it might have been a blessing to run with the slower friend. Considering your recent injuries, it's a nice way to ease back into racing without feeling compelled to push it.

    I don't cross-train at all. Not that I shouldn't, I just don't.

Doing weights with your legs isn't a bad thing, though it won't help you get stronger as a runner. Only running will do that, but it IS a good way to help stave off injuries. I should do some cross-training, particularly since I'm older now, but I just hate it so much. NOTHING is as boring as lifting weights.

I don't lift weights, but I would suggest that you really pay attention to stretching your legs prior to running. Not that it will make you faster, but it will help prevent injuries.

Thanks, Sal. I think you're right about that. I'm not a particularly fast runner these days, but Im sure I would have wanted to push it had I not been with a friend.

I'm going to GRADUALLY try to increase my distance and speed, but I'll be careful. I really want to do a half this year and I can't take an injury setback.

Injuries suck; I've been beset with them since last July. Getting old blows.

I finally bit the bullet and went to the physical therapist this week, on Wednesday. She looked at the leg and found a knot in my hamstring which was either a knotted muscle or scar tissue from an earlier tear.

She smeared vaseline all over it (no, she wasn't hot) and then took this hard plastic wedge thing and just scraped up and down the leg, including the outside of the knee, since my IT band was bothering me ever since the marathon.

The run later that night was fine, and I felt looser. The next night I went for a tempo run at the park already feeling sore now that it was 24 hours since Helga worked me over and that run was hilarity. I had to push to do 7:45 miles for the first three miles, and by the fourth mile each leg weighed 100 pounds. It was ridiculous, they were just lead. I finished at five miles, wanting to do six but my legs were gone.

Between the vaseline rubbing and the chick telling you not to wear pants when you came in for your appointment, I'm starting to think that you've got some freaky medical professionals where you live.

Yes, getting old is not fun. When I was in the Army I could run two miles in 13 minutes. I'd love to be able to do that again.

Just did my 10-12 mile off raod race this morning, brilliant fun, 1hr 35 mins I seem to remember, not got an official time or placement yet, will post that later. Excellent run though, and for the first time ever over this sort of distance, I felt fucking brilliant, didnt need to stop and stretch (which I have to do at least 3 times on a half marathon) so I was really pleased with the physical aspect of it, I only tired on the last mile, but still managed to sprint the last 100 meteres to beat the fucker who thought he could overtake me near the line!

I'll see if I can post some photos too shortly>

Great job, Peter! Looking forward to the official results and the photos.

Sounds like you benefitted from the hard training you did in the lead up to the race. Way to go.

Should get the official results tomorrow morning I think, Ill post them later Monday when I get home.

The extra training is paying dividends, almost without noticing, until today I guess, plus the circuit training is doing wonders for my hill running and recovery afterwards!

Cheers Sam, good work on your run, and keep that ankle safe!

Fantastic job Peter, and cool pics too! Amazing time considering the muck you had to run through, that's super fast.

Cheers Sal. Yeah, I was pleased with the time, I cant remember my last time for an event I did by Saab and Saloman (Like this one was) last May, so its hard to gauge if its better or not, but I should get to find my final placing tomorrow, so I'll post that, and any photos of the course I can find too. But in general I was pleased, mainly because i was so relaxed for the most part, felt good too apart from the last mile when my legs tired a little, but it was good fun, apart from the stinking bogs and sand/shingle hills....
