Cheers Sam. Yep, the Achilles tendon shit was no joke, about a half mile in, I needed to stretch, then stretch again and again and again. Got to the point I didnt want to bother with running, so I bit the bullet and went to get it checked out, glad I did. Hows your running coming on? Got any races lined up?
Definitely doing this 11 miler this sunday, just a shame I wont be able to get up and watch Cotto! Anyway, i'll let you know how I got on Sunday afternoon. Did a 6 mile run before work this morning, felt good, hope this pain free running continues!
It's going pretty well, avoiding injuries and stepping up the mileage. All but one run has gone quite well. I have a group run today with some folks at work who are training for a half marathon in June to support the Leukemia and Lymphoma Foundation. Our company team is seven people right now, which is very cool. They want to do five, but my day calls for eight, so I'll do a few before they get there. Then I have 17 tomorrow.
So this race tomorrow is a trail race? Sweet. Never done one of those.
Running with others?? Thats something I dont have the luxury of doing, training is all done on my own unfortunately, hence why I try to get some races in. Glad the speed training is paying dividends Sal, 17 tomorrow? Good luck with that my man.
Yep, a trail run, I recommend them mate, good fun, plus the uneven terrain keeps your concentration away from the mileage/time, and on your footing and puddles/tree roots etc, time passes quickly that way. Definitely do one if you get the chance
On a side note Sal, apparently running off-road/trail running works more muscles also, so its not a bad thing to consider in that sense.

I used to hate the idea of running with others, but I have a regular training partner for Sunday long runs. She's a 45-year old mother of three who is a cyborg. She really pushes me, and we have this cool unspoken competitive thing going. I'll think she's speeding up, so I'll push the pace just a little. She sees this and will increase her pace, and so on. It's never discussed, which is the funny thing. In the last couple miles, we just try to bury each other. She's good, she won five age group awards in major races here last year, in the half and full marathon. Already qualified for Boston, though she doesn't really have any interest in it.
I have run trails before, but not raced them. I think I had a bad experience of twisitng an ankle and not wanting to mess with it after that. That's impressive though, it's harder than running on roads for sure.
She sounds like a machine! It must be good to have another dedicated runner to do your long runs with, especially with the motivation factor. I dont mind running alone at all, its meditative at its best, a long slog at its worst. It would be nice to find a good running partner though, although Im not sure its going to happen anytime soon. I also run at 5am before work, probably 6-7am for my long runs at the weekend, not sure too many people would appreciate that.
I like trail runs, they add something different that roads dont, but they can be a bitch for injuries like you said with your ankle. Unfortunately though, there aren't that many off-road runs where I am, Im travelling an hour as it is tomorrow to run this one, it is what it is though.
Well fellas, I completed it, 1hr 47mins of absolute HELL!!!!! Man, thats the toughest race I have ever been in, partly due to my lack of practice, but damn that course was a fucking killer. The race itself was called "The Terminator", guess I should have expected the worst in any case, but this was beyond my expectations. Knee high mud in places, too many hills that were impossible to run up, you had to literally crawl up them, and the downhills were terrible, worse than uphill infact due to the uneven ground (All farm land basically), just glad I didnt break an ankle. The major plus point though, my achilles is now nowhere to be noticed, the Podiatrist has done some great stuff with the orthotics I have, brilliant!
Would I do it again? Yes, but not without proper training like this time, it was so mentally tough I just wanted it to be over it was unreal, but its done and dusted now, a few blisters, and some aching limbs tomorrow no doubt, Im sure I'll laugh about it later, watching people losing their shoes in the mud was pretty funny!
I took my camera as I was going to post a few pics on here for you guys, damn thing had no battery left, I'll post some of me next one if I remember.
Cheers SalYeah, the mental aspect is hard, you only really strengthen it by puttin in more and more miles, going out of your comfort zone and willing yourself to push on, its not easy, and I would be being dishonest if I didnt think at times "Fuck this shit for a sunday morning!" and want to stop, but its also a pride thing, for me anyway, I always want to finish something I start, and even though I felt like absolute shit at the end (Never felt like I did with about 1 mile to go, had no energy at all..lack of training didnt help here i feel!) I had to finish, I would have crawled over the line if I had to. But like I said, no way would I do THAT race without the proper training, it was that hard, I'll see if I can fins some photos of previous years Sal, post them up.
Similarities with Boxing? Yeah, I see them too, its yourself and yourself only that can make you push through when your head says otherwise, your body too. Its mentally tough for sure, seriously tough. But I still love it!!!
It's totally a pride thing. I understand that completely. It even comes into play when you see a runner out in the distance running in the same direction you are, and you feel compelled to reel him in. Or when you unconsciously speed up on a run when other people are around. I do that constantly. It all boils down to pride.
Post them pics!
Damn righ about that reeling them runners in front of you inI almost feel obliged to overtake them, and if they overtake me back, I immediately run past them, even if its silently killing me to do so! Pride, its good and bad! As for running faster when others are around, its funny, you often find yourself alone in patches of the course, after 4 miles or so once the group has dispersed and everyone finds their pace, but even if I was, when I see a race Marshal pointing which way to go ahead, I always speed up, as if to say, "I would be at the front, had to take a leak
" Strange but true, at least I aint the only one though, cheers for that Sal!!
The pics above are only what I could find right now, they post pics from each year, they should be online this coming week, I'll keep an eye out, might have one of me in there!
