    Just started boxing

I'm 23 years old and got into boxing after watching Pacquiao take down Hatton. I joined a local gym and just started last week. It has been hell. Which is a good thing for me cause I like to train. The owner told me that I would have to complete 42 classes for beginners then I would move up to an intermediate class. After the intermediate class I would be able to do the advanced class that included light sparring. So if I constantly went to the gym I would start sparring in about 6-7 months.

This is what they're having us do:

    -Stretch
-Run one mile/24 laps around the gym
    -Stretch
-Aerobics with dumbbells - basically throwing punches with light dumbbells
    -Stretch
    -Punching combinations on the mitts

I was just wondering if this is what others who joined a gym had to do? I think that this is a good way for someone like me to learn the basics and gain fitness. I want to be able to fight in the amateurs. Is it too late? I know some people who started boxing at 14, 15.

Thats quite a bit different than the gyms I have been to, aside from the stretching constantly for long periods of time thing. Usually the noobs have to hold each stretch for an entire round, which is a bitch if your tight. But otherwise the gyms I have been to and am going to right now dont do much of any weight lifting, and especially not with dumbbells or anything cause it can throw your timing and technique way off. Maybe its fine for beginners though, not too sure. Then they just typically blast you if your new (well everyone gets it but especially the noobs) with drill training. Anything from laterals around the ring to all kinds of different pushups to hitting your stomach with the medicine ball to toughen you up. And of course the jump rope for 3 rounds is everyones warm up. The gyms I have been to get you sparring a lot quicker too. Its up to you and the coaches but usually guys are in there in a month if they are ok with it. They match you up with someone who is on the same skill/experience level. Some gyms do it the opposite - put you in with really good guys who take it easy on you but my current coach seems to think that equal skill should be matched to push each other to dig and see what works otherwise you will probably be swinging at air and getting hit with everything if your in there with someone way better than you

thanks for the reply. the dumbbells are light, between 1-3 pounds. i think they're only used to strengthen the shoulders. im going to ask if the 42 classes is just a recommendation because i would rather get started on sparring a lot sooner..

    Re: Just started boxing

My routine at my gym usually goes anywhere from 3-6rounds skipping to start, 3 rounds shadow boxing, 5rounds heavy bag then abdominals. Every other day I do weight training whihc includes bench press, decline and incline bench with no weights on the bar 2x60, as well as clean press squats with jsut the bar 4x50. I also do shoulder rotations with 2.5pound dumbells. Abdominals everyday. Sparring is usually 1-2times a week (it's hard for me to get sparring partners since I am one of the smaller, if not the smallest fighter at the gym at 5'6 126pounds). I have been boxing for about 3 months now, is this similar to most gyms???
