Kevin Finnegan Found Dead
Kevin Finnegan, the former British and European middleweight champion, has been found dead at his home in Hillingdon, west London. The 60 year-old’s body was found by police after he failed to answer his front door and had not been seen for at least five days. Finnegan, the younger brother of 1968 Olympic Gold medallist Chris Finnegan -is best known for his two fights with a peek Marvin Hagler in 1978. The then 30 year-old British middleweight was stopped twice in the space of three months by the teak tough 26 year-old in Hagler’s home town of Boston, Massachusetts. The first fight in March end via a tko inside nine rounds whilst the second on May 13 was called off after seven rounds. Finnegan also fought future undisputed world middleweight champion Alan Minter three times, losing all each time on points via the old 15 round distance. |

Wow, didn't hear about this. RIP Kevin.
His record doesn't really do him justice, but he was a real fundamentally sound fighter. Goody Petronelli always had good things to say about him. Aside from those fights with Minter and Hagler, he holds wins over hard-hitting Gratien Tonna and Tony Sibson. I would have liked to see a fight between Finnegan and Mark Kaylor, who began fighting professionally a little after Finnegan called it quits. |
