Team sports involve teams playing at least once a week whereas top boxers fight an average of twice a year. Also, whilst the likes of Ricky Hatton get big support from Britain the majority of other British boxers are unknown amongst the mainstream.

I also believe, as is the case with me, boxing is a sport where nationality isn't necesarilly relavent. I like individuals and characters in boxing for who they are and not what it says on their passport. When you have men who are essentially putting their lives on the line it evokes extreme emotion within you that cannot be solely attributed to a common nationality.

Yeah sure but these aspects of the game have more to do with how the sport is promoted, the fact that Boxer A gets all the limelight where as boxers B, C, and D etc never get shown at all is a problem with the media not country support. And you got American boxers like Pavlik/Mayweather etc PUSHED by all the camera's they can to get them into as many people's living rooms but they STILL don't get any support. You may not feel that nationalism doesn't get thrown into boxing, but tell that do a few Puerto Ricans or Mexicans and just about any other ethnicity other than whats here in the states and I garentee you you'll get a shit load of people who feel completely opposite to how you feel.

To throw nationalistic support on a boxer has nothing to do with a lack of respect towards other boxers, everyone respects boxers going into that ring - but for me when a Puerto Rican is in there boxing and is going for a title shot then its a BIG deal and a lot of people rally behind their countrymen. Nationalistic support is VERY relevant to much smaller/poorer countries like Puerto Rico/Mexico because when a boxer makes it on that kind of a stage that athlete represents his ENTIRE country to the rest of the world.

Yes it is a big deal

Yes but we were talking about America and I was countering your claim that British boxers get big support. The Mexican's and Puerto Rican's are very patriotic and thats brilliant because the sport wouldn't be the same without that passion. Could you imagine Hopkins/Trinidad without all that passion behind Felix?

You have to remember that America and Britain have people who follow succesful teams whereas the Mexican's and Puerto Rican's don't really. People over here are so into football (soccer to you) it must be stifling to anyone who doesn't. You guys have football, baseball and basketball.

Boxing isn't an easy sport to follow and in countries where there are establised, popular, mainstream sports it's inevitable a sport like boxing would become diluted.

Ahh I agree with that, good point. But I still feel that boxing is a great enough of a sport to compete against mainstream American/British sports, it just has to be done right and has to be thrown into regular tv!

Also how do you account for the Brits showing a hell of a lot more support to their boxers...Lennox..Hatton...Naz.. where as American boxers regardless of how good they are go unwatched.

Do you credit this to America having greater big time national sports such as American football/baseball?

Yes but for that to happen it would need promoters to be less selfish and greedy.

Boxing is not that big out here. Basketball, Football, and Baseball are huge out here. If it's not Hoya, Tyson, Mayweather, Tito, Holyfield, Ali, and SRL not to many people will know any fighter or even careless about them.

I might be way off on this topic

Missed your edit there. You have to remember that England doesn't have a lot of sporting success on the world stage so the likes of Lennox, Hatton and Naz are a god send to the long suffering British sports fan.

You guys are different in the sense that you have great sports that everyone can enjoy from within whereas football (soccer) is very elitist on a national level and we have massive under achievers on an international level.

It's wierd though that here people will passionately follow obscure football teams but not follow genuinely succesful boxers. I guess people are just obesessed with football here.

We are so used to our American Baseball and our American Football and American Hockey...But when it comes to global competition we either turn a blind eye or are ignorant to the fact that national pride is seriously thrown into supporting these athletes.
I think I know why. Its because Americans don't like to be wrong, and so they don't want to risk backing a "single athlete", cause if he loses there cannot be any blame forced on anyone else on the team - its all on that player. Call me crazy but I think that this is one form of the reason. And also because espn doesnt cover it

Yeah when you posted with the previous post that was something that you brought to my mind that I didn't think of before, the massive success within the united states and their own sport competition between the states is most likely a huge reason and that the Brits will accept a world known boxer with open arms when they get one. It still seems kind of ridiculous though when you think about it, I mean its just odd how much disinterest Americans have towards their own famous boxers.

Absolutley true, absolutely my position. It's nice when a Scottish talent comes along (Paul Appleby looks ok, he's the current British Featherweight champion) but when there's nobody, I don't really feel it. Hopkins and Marquez are my favourites, by distance. Of the British fighters, I probably like Haye best.

The pattern with Bernard though is he puts on a must see one night and then gives a few fights that are non PPV material IMO. Its a cycle. We will all be tricked by this last performance but watch how conservative he gets the next time out.
