It is an interesting post but not necessarily accurate in my opinion. You can't compare boxing to any other sport. Team sports involve teams playing at least once a week whereas top boxers fight an average of twice a year. Also, whilst the likes of Ricky Hatton get big support from Britain the majority of other British boxers are unknown amongst the mainstream.
I also believe, as is the case with me, boxing is a sport where nationality isn't necesarilly relavent. I like individuals and characters in boxing for who they are and not what it says on their passport. When you have men who are essentially putting their lives on the line it evokes extreme emotion within you that cannot be solely attributed to a common nationality. |

To throw nationalistic support on a boxer has nothing to do with a lack of respect towards other boxers, everyone respects boxers going into that ring - but for me when a Puerto Rican is in there boxing and is going for a title shot then its a BIG deal and a lot of people rally behind their countrymen. Nationalistic support is VERY relevant to much smaller/poorer countries like Puerto Rico/Mexico because when a boxer makes it on that kind of a stage that athlete represents his ENTIRE country to the rest of the world. Yes it is a big deal |

You have to remember that America and Britain have people who follow succesful teams whereas the Mexican's and Puerto Rican's don't really. People over here are so into football (soccer to you) it must be stifling to anyone who doesn't. You guys have football, baseball and basketball. Boxing isn't an easy sport to follow and in countries where there are establised, popular, mainstream sports it's inevitable a sport like boxing would become diluted. |

Also how do you account for the Brits showing a hell of a lot more support to their boxers...Lennox..Hatton...Naz.. where as American boxers regardless of how good they are go unwatched. Do you credit this to America having greater big time national sports such as American football/baseball? |

You guys are different in the sense that you have great sports that everyone can enjoy from within whereas football (soccer) is very elitist on a national level and we have massive under achievers on an international level. It's wierd though that here people will passionately follow obscure football teams but not follow genuinely succesful boxers. I guess people are just obesessed with football here. |

Absolutley true, absolutely my position. It's nice when a Scottish talent comes along (Paul Appleby looks ok, he's the current British Featherweight champion) but when there's nobody, I don't really feel it. Hopkins and Marquez are my favourites, by distance. Of the British fighters, I probably like Haye best. |

The pattern with Bernard though is he puts on a must see one night and then gives a few fights that are non PPV material IMO. Its a cycle. We will all be tricked by this last performance but watch how conservative he gets the next time out.
