That is sad...
Tho I think most people thinking it was a forgone conclusion that Pavlik was either going to KO him or just simply outwork him played into the low numbers...the casual fan most of the time will not waste their money on what they believe is a mismatch or blowout (ignore the Tyson prime numbers of course...different game back then...and Tyson was MUST SEE TV!!!). I mean, Winky, Tarver, both Taylor's did good numbers...as did Pavlik - Taylor 2...so it definately leads into the belief that what I outlinded above was the main cause. As jecx said tho...boxing needs something like that. A Sat. night...prime time...regular tv (4-5-7 or even fox) weekly fight night. Last edited by sues2nd; 10-31-2008 at 02:13 PM. |

So after seeing that performance...you guys still think Hopkins being boring is a forgone conclusion?
For that matter have the both of you seen it? It was pure masterclass. Far from boring... |

That said tho...look at most fights. If the general consensus is that its gonna be a blowout...the fights almost all of the time do bad numbers (as I said, fighters like Tyson are the exception, not the rule).

Guys this is very simple. Boxing doesn't connect with AngloAmerican's in the USA period. There is no other way to put this...Boxers that come out of Britain have massive country support. Boxers that come out of any latin country, PR/Mex/Cuba/Dom etc etc etc...They have their whole country behind them.
I have no idea why American's don't root behind their boxers. You get them rooting feverishly behind American TEAMS with a group of athletes, but why won't they get behind an individual solo athlete in boxing? I don't get it..Where is the American pride backing these great American boxers? Nationality has a HUGE role in GLOBAL sports, that is something that American's completely overlook. We are so used to our American Baseball and our American Football and American Hockey...But when it comes to global competition we either turn a blind eye or are ignorant to the fact that national pride is seriously thrown into supporting these athletes. |

I never understood the concern with this stuff. So a lot of people missed a great fight. None of us did! We all saw it...there is more money than ever for the fighters and great fights still get made.
The numbers are just numbers. |
