One of the best fights of the decade, pure drama all throughout the fight.
The atmosphere that night was amazing too. Even watching the fight back for the 10th time, I still get pumped up for it when the fighters come out. Vargas had the cockiest look on his face ever and it was hilarious when he was dropped so quickly by Tito. Vargas could have won the fight if he boxed intelligently more often and made Tito fight his fight, but credit to Tito for never stopping the pressure (his stamina was insane, especially when you consider how much he put on those punches).. I wish a rematch happened back then. Do any of you remember if Tito got a lot of criticism for going straight to 160 instead of giving Vargas a rematch at 154? I think too much controversy is made out of the low blows. They really weren't that huge of a deal. Tito wasn't badly hurt and nobody could seriously argue that they saved him from being stopped. This fight brings back so many memories. I saw this fight at my big brother ex girlfriend house and when Tito KO Vargas in the 12th the whole neigborhood went berserk like it was new years eve.
To Igor, yes Vargas did a nice job of boxing Tito the only problem was that he was still getting hit flush in rounds that he won, so even if he tried to box the whole fight through it still would have been the same result. But Vargas was a true elite in his short prime. |

I don't remember any criticism. Vargas was beaten thoroughly, the consensus at the time was that he was rushed into that fight and really needed some more fights before facing top competition. Plus his people were eying DLH $ and nothing would have stopped that faster than another Tito beating. |

I hear you papo, whenever Tito fought and KO an opponent it was like a mini parade. The best place to be at when Tito fought was the Bronx and Spanish Harlem which is where I'm at, everybody even those who were'nt Boricua use to love it because it was an excuse to wild out and not have the police be on your back. There will never be a more beloved sports figure that us Ricans loved to death like Trinidad, hopefully Juanma brings back that feeling because Cotto never really connected to us the same way Tito did. |

Deep down inside Mexicans respect Tito too lol.
I always never really paid attention to all of the Pacquiao fanatics why? Because they remind me a lot of myself and all the TitoManiacs growing up watching Trinidad fight like he was a freaking god! I felt he was unbeatable at times and when he came off that shaky fight with DLH and then moved up in weight and seemed to get stronger and stronger I was just like "ZOMG", But then Bernard Hopkins said "jecxbox, welcome to boxing" and my world came crumbling down when he caught Tito's punch and countered it with that right hook in the 12th round! ![]() ![]()

I have no idea, I'd always hope to see Ricans going nuts after his big wins but no one ever did. I love Cotto I think he is an amazing boxer. But people want to see dynamite you know what I mean? And when that dynamite is within a boxer with a ridiculously nice personality smiling all the time and connecting with the people that = magic.
This is why it took Cotto about half of his career fights to win over the Puerto Rican crowd hardcore, and it only took JuanMa a few right hooks on PDL to win them over. I think its bullshit because Cotto is a true great fighter and he has represented PR with nothing but respect because of his strong character. |
