This matchup is supposedly being made by their teams right now ([Only registered and activated users can see links. ]).
I heard about the possibility of this exciting matchup shortly after Angulo-Tsurkan, but I can't believe Gary Shaw is actually putting him in against Mayorga. IMO, unless Mayorga comes in very bad shape, he's going to destroy Angulo, stopping him early. Judging my the Mosley fight, Mayorga clearly still has something left and as long as he's fairly motivated, he'll be in good enough condition to get the job done. Angulo has break-you-down type of power, but not much one punch power.. certainly not enough to hurt Mayorga with a single shot. He can't fight well going backwards and against Mayorga, he will be forced to. His defense is also very leaky, he's not quick on his feet (or with his hands), and he's been hurt/stunned before by much lighter hitters, so his chin is very suspect. Mayorga still has the chin, size/physical strength, timing, power, and awkwardness to make Angulo extremely uncomfortable and land some serious bombs on him. Anybody giving Angulo a real chance in this one or favoring him over Mayorga? Mayorga should become the fighter that the 154 pound prospects need to beat to prove they're ready for the top level. I heavily favor Mayorga to stop Kirkland and Martirosyan. I'm not sure about Sergio Martinez though. I favor Martinez to outbox Mayorga to a decision win, but I think it's a close fight and one that Mayorga could win by landing a huge right hand on Martinez (who also has a suspect, shaky chin) and taking him out. Mayorga could still do some damage in this division at the level right below the championship level. I love watching his crazy style, hopefully he'll train hard in the future like he did against Mosley so he could stay in the mix for another year or two. |

Also, Kirkland is fighting Brian Vera on the Hatton-Malignaggi undercard. That could turn out the same way as Andy Lee against Vera. If Kirkland doesn't get him early, there's a good chance he's screwed.
All of these top 154 pound prospects have serious flaws and very suspect chins. Vanes Martirosyan's problems with pressure were exposed in his last fight too. |

Do you think this fight will go past 6 rounds? I could easily see a Mayorga blowout within 2 rounds. All he needs to do is land something huge and it shouldn't be too hard against an opponent like Angulo.

Wow nice pick...I'm actually not sure what can happen...Angulo is pretty damn slow but has heavy hands. His chin is average but Mayorga's power is not what it used to be...Should be interesting but I just hope Mayorga doesn't get wreckless because he could take some damage if he gets cocky and just sits there taking blow after blow with Angulo.

I agree, Mayorga is trouble, if he is in shape. Against Tsurkan Angulo got tagged way too much. His hand speed is pretty good, but his feet are awfully slow, and he doesn't know when to trade and when to move.
He spars with Margarito and he is his role model as a fighter, right? You need a supernatural chin to do that with success. |
