Former undisputed junior middleweight champion Winky Wright was set to end a 17-month layoff on Dec. 4, but now he'll have to wait a bit longer to return to the ring.
Wright suffered an injury to his left hand sparring several days ago, forcing him to withdraw from a Versus-televised main event against Michi Munoz in Snoqualmie, Wash., Golden Boy Promotions executive David Itskowitch told ESPN.com on Monday night. The card has been canceled, Itskowitch said. "He injured his left hand near the base of the hand near his wrist," Itskowitch said. "He hit someone on top of the head while he was sparring and the hand started swelling up. He had an MRI but I was told he has a 33 percent decrease of strength in his hand." After the injury happened, Wright thought he might still be able to fight by resting the hand for a few days, Itskowitch said. However, on Monday Wright saw a hand specialist, who told him he could not fight next month, Itskowitch said. Unwilling to accept various fight offers because he was not satisfied with the purse offers, Wright (51-4-1, 25 KOs) hasn't fought since losing a decision to Bernard Hopkins in a 170-pound fight in July 2007. But Wright grew restless and wanted to fight, so he took a lower-profile fight against Munoz (21-2, 14 KOs). They were scheduled to meet at a contract weight of 164 pounds as Wright worked his way down to the 160-pound middleweight division, where he was a top contender after vacating the junior middleweight world championship. The plan had been for Wright to shake off the ring rust from the long layoff against Munoz and then move on to a bigger fight on HBO in the first quarter of 2009. With the injury, it is unclear what his schedule will look like. The Dec. 4 co-feature was slated to be super middleweight prospect Daniel Jacobs against Victor Lares in an eight-rounder. That fight may move to Dec. 6 and open the Oscar De La Hoya-Manny Pacquiao HBO PPV telecast at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Dan Rafael covers boxing for ESPN.com. |
