Apparently Arum left him no choice. It was either fight Jennings for the vacant WBO title or wait until June to rematch Margarito. Cotto didn't seem pleased and the last I read, he hadn't got back to Arum by the set deadline. I'm sure he knows Jennings would be a Gomez-like fight and that doesn't do anything to help him prepare for tougher opponents. Jesus Soto-Karass was mentioned a couple months back as a possible opponent; he would have been a much better choice. As would Cintron who was also mentioned by Arum. As Amsterdam said, a complete waste of a fight.

Jennings being ranked second by the WBO is what's wrong with boxing. Promoters can pay these sanctioning bodies and they'll gladly raise a fighter like Jennings who's biggest wins are over Bradley Pryce and Ross Minter. And for Christ's sake, he lost to Young "Who?" Mutley just two years ago.

Ouch. Colin Lynes also KOed Mutley, domestic Brit cream puff, think the level of an Amir Khan opponent. |

Both will end in TKO's from 1-3. Garaunteed. Even Gomez would smash Jennings, that's an awakening there. Take the 30$ and get a good meal somewhere. ![]() At least that'd be enjoyable. |

Maybe what actually happened was that Bob Arum did give Cotto the ultimatum bullshit, but Cotto ignored it as a slight "fuck you" to show Arum that he can't control him like that. Who knows, doesn't even matter.. I just want to see Cotto in the ring against anybody as soon as possible. Nothing would be worse than Margarito after a year layoff.
Cotto-Berto would have been great too. Agh.. the opportunity was there. |

Yep and the weird thing is that HBO and Showtime passed it up. If Arum wants these boys to be crossover attractions. He should put them on Versus or a network channel. But they want there money in these hard times.

I would have preferred Cotto to fight one of two type of fighters before his Margarito rematch. Either a fighter that is tall for the division (think Cintron) or a fighter that brings non stop pressure (Baldimor). The reason being is because Margarito combines both attributes being a tall pressure welterweight so it would be smart for team cotto to get use to figting fighters that share some of Margarito main strenghts. The best case scenario would have been to fight Cintron (too bad I think hes fighting at 154) and then sparring with Baldimor before the Margarito fight. On a side note I often wonder if Cotto shares Mosley weakness which is struggling over taller opponents, but its hard to confirm this because Margarito was really the only tall skilled fighter he faced. With mosley it was proven against Forrest and Wright for a total of four fights.
