On the site where there is news about fights, the word is that Mayweather Sr. and Hatton have discussed this and there is interest on both sides.
What do you think? Just picture it now, Hatton laying on the ropes doing the shoulder-roll defense. ![]() On a serious note, I don't think it's that bad of an idea. Maybe Sr. could imrpove Hatton's defense on the way inside. |

You can't teach an old dog new tricks. Hatton should just improve what he was once good at. I think it would confuse him too much, and end up sitting between two stools being totally inefficient. I could be wrong though...

He might be able to get hatton back to his Boxing fundamentals. Something that might have been lost with his old trainer due to friendship and overlooking his obvious problems. The fact that Mayweather Sr. won't take shit from hatton and won't take no for an answer from Ricky should be a positive direction for ricky. You can't teach ricky a different style, but you can get him back to his fundamentals, brush up his reflexes, FUNDAMENTAL defensive flaws can also be worked on...His problems won't improve much in 1 fight or 1 training camp....But if Ricky sticks around for 3-4 more fights and tries one more run at 140lbs he could benefit from it.
And guys we're talking about 140lbs here. The opposition is filled with prospects but none of them are A level fighters. I think the problem that Ricky has in terms of our view of him is that we measure him up to bigger fighters like Cotto/Mosley or ridiculously talented fighters like Floyd Mayweather. Hatton got wupped up by Floyd (who is an Elite fighter not just an A fighter), but he also brought the best out in Floyd Mayweather...At least thats something to show...Hatton is not a B level fighter, I'd say he is a A- level fighter in all honesty at his prime time AND weight. Always been a fan of ricky and always will. Last edited by jecxbox; 09-02-2008 at 11:07 PM. |

Its not a bad thing, but I agree with whats been said, you cant teach Ricky too much now, not this far into his career. One point to make, even if he gets these few fundamentals improved, it will make a difference:
1. The Jab (Its been almost non-existent lately, especially as the fights have worn on, he lead in without using the jab, which is ridiculous) 2. Head movement (This is also something that he used to do more often, but it has only been present for half of the rounds lately) get this sorted, as well as with the jab, he wont have to stop so many punches with his face. I know ricky's style is not to everyones liking, but he never used to clinch as much as he does now, so if he can use the jab to move in on, throw the left to the body/combo to head, then move to the side, he has not need to clinch so often. Without the jab, he gets hit coming in, hence he clinches to tie the opp. up. For the life of me I cant understand why he doesnt use it as much, hes fairly quick with it, and being so small/reach being so small, he should utilise it to get to the inside, rather than throwing hooks, body shots to move in on. Well it all depends on, if Mayweather wants to add new dimensions that has never been part of Hattons arsenal.
I would have prefered Roach, who would likely add dynamic punching power to Hatton. He works best if he is a bulldog - at least to me. I agree with the jab thing though. |
