I want to hear the experts opinions, I will give mine in the morning. But I would like to know about his place in history, legacy or money, how he would do against the greats at 130-140. I think 147 is out the question. Some fights he should have taken besides Cotto and Margo. Please nothing negative about the way he acts, just boxing please

Acb made a very similar thread to this so you may not get very many hits. To sum it up for me; I think he might be the greatest 130lb'er to lace them up. I only favor Arguello over him in a 15-rounder. In 12 rounds, Mayweather may be my favorite. Nontheless he has his mark in history at 130 lbs, and most people will agree that he is at least in the top 3 best ever at that weight, if not THE best ever. Now once you go up to lightweight and light welter is where it gets down to personal preference for head to head ranking. There is a good group of guys I favor over him, namely guys like JCC, Whitaker, Duran, etc

He was near perfection in the boxing ring, a true boxing master. I enjoyed watching his skills, and then I go the gym and imitate and get rocked pretty consistently.

He had the potential to be really great, but it is hard to say how great, because you need to face great opposition as well. Sadly he took the safe route most of the time.
I don't think anyone in the world argues against that he has/had smooth skills, and maybe that is why some feel he should have done alot more with it. I am one of those. |

true he wouldn't be rated higher if not for his career at 130 and 135.. if he was to do a sal sanchez before moving up to 140 he could have been overrated by more fans

I would call Gatti a fairly weak champ at that time. And Hatton at 147 is not really were he is at his best - Collazo was a fairly untested champ, and he in turn was totally whitewashed by Mosley.
You have to put things into their prober context. |
