Default Penalosa/Mares

Rumors are that Gerry Penalosa will defend his WBO title against Abner Mares on the undercard of Pac/Hoya. I think its a great matchup. If this happens who you got and why?

Only seen Abner once, on an undercard (Was it Hoya v Forbes?) so I can really comment, if it is true, its quite a step up for Mares is it not?

great fight if it happens, it would be the main reason to buy the pac-hoya farce..i'm picking penalosa here by close UD or possibly late round KO although i can see mares winning if he outworks penalosa.

I am also leaning towards Penalosa right now for a UD or late t/ko.

And Peter I think he was on a ppv undercard one time (though I could be wrong, my memory sucks)....can't remember which one though. Pretty sure it wasn't for the Gabi fight,,,,I think he might have been on the Pac/JMM II undercard?

Haven't seen either, and not sure what to think that Mares fights 2 months prior to this fight, which is a big step up.

Still, I go for Mares on this one. My gut says so...

Mares isn't a bad pick; this is a pretty close pick 'em fight imo. I just think a guy like Gerry, who isn't shot or well past it by any means, is too much for the prospect at this point. He could certainly outwork him though and stick Penalosa from the outside with his good movement. Not sure if Mares will get any respect though; Penalosas chin is iron. I will go more in depth and have an "official" pick if the fight gets signed

Thanks for that, Cardstars - and I look forward to it.

Maybe Mares will avenge all the mexicans that lost to Pacquiao .

Yeah, that's completely out of the question IMO. Mares is a very light puncher and Penalosa has a very solid chin. He'll be able to walk through everything Mares throws at him. If Penalosa had a high workrate, I would heavily favor him to win, but since he doesn't, this is a close matchup. Mares will be able to outbox and outwork him, but I also think Mares is the type of boxer who will crack when under the pressure of someone like Penalosa. He's uncomfortable against much worse pressure fighters and his defense is leaky. He's not particularly physically strong either, so he allows opponents to bully him around the ring way too often. I suspect his chin is shaky too because of this, so I think Penalosa is capable of hurting him badly if he catches him with something big. The main worry here about Penalosa though is that he will not pressure Mares for 3 minutes of every round. If he isn't aggressive enough, Penalosa might make Mares look bad, but still end up losing a decision because of his lack of punch output and Mares' superior boxing skill.

I need to rewatch some of their fights, but right now I favor Penalosa to win by close decision or late stoppage. Basically, I think Mares will become uncomfortable when Penalosa attacks him (making Mares sloppier, more vulnerable to getting hit, and too tentative at times) and he'll be overwhelmed by the pressure in a long, tough fight. It's still close though and I might change my pick later.

oh wow i really like Mares and him fighting Penalosa is such a high step in class for him. Hopefully everything goes well, I like both fighters but I'll be pulling for Mares in this one if it happens.

i've just rewatched some of penalosa's fights yesterday but most importantly his last 2 fights with that thai and JG..i agree with your post, thats about the same way i see it, it amazes me how penalosa is still on top despite his age and his long lay off from boxing. I am to rewatched mares' recent fights later though, this is too early of a step up for mares, i give him about 30% chance of winning
