damn i got a 24 ban at esb for postng this article, it looks like the fight may not happen at all
BoxingScene.com has learned that tonight's lightweight championship contest at the Beau Rivage Theatre in Biloxi, Mississipi, between IBF/WBO/WBA lightweight champion Nate Campbell (32-5-1, 25 KOs) and Joan Guzman (28-0, 17 KOs), is still in doubt. Guzman was 3.5-pounds (138.5) over the lightweight limit during yesterday's weigh-in. He was given two additional hours to make the weight, never came back to for a second attempt. One source told BoxingScene that Guzman was very dehydrated and went to the hospital last night to get fluids back into his body. The word on the street in Mississippi is that Guzman's camp is contemplating his withdrawal from the fight because of his physical state. BoxingScene has heard that Guzman's camp was told by the Mississipi State Athletic Commission that if their fighter pulls out, he could be looking at an indefinite suspension, because there is a general feeling that Guzman and his team had to have known days before the weigh-in that a potential problem existed with making the lightweight limit. If a fight happens to go forward, Guzman may be asked to step on the scales to check his current weight. If Guzman is considerably bigger than Campbell, that could be a whole other issue in itself. A final decision will probably come down in the next 2-3 hours. We will keep you updated. |

Guzman's luck is unbelievable..
Everybody is pissed off at him, but nobody even knows if it's his fault or not. Something very unexpected happened and he came in overweight. It's not like he didn't put everything into his training or he's not taking the fight seriously. He just had some strange shit happen to him and apparently couldn't get down in weight in the final days like he was able to before. If he's in bad health right now, hopefully he just pulls out of the fight. No point of seeing him in the ring against someone like Campbell when he's not 100%. It'll fuck up his career a bit, but it'll be better than coming in against Campbell in bad shape and getting a KO loss or something like that. If he does step into the ring, the judging really worries me now too. Two Mississippi judges and one from Oklahoma on a Don King card where his champion will be the aggressor for the entire fight. Guzman will probably need a very dominating performance to get the decision. Another update: "Now a source at Biloxi, who did not wish to be quoted, tells me that Guzman was stuck at the 138-pound mark for three days and struggled to lose the weight, but it just would not come off — his body had no more weight to lose. Apparently Guzman was feeling fine on Saturday morning after a good night's rest and having replenished his system, but his camp is upset and unhappy about the turn of events." Apparently the fight is off:
"Sources close to the situation have just informed us that the clash between former super featherweight champion Joan Guzman and WBA, IBF & WBO champion Nate Campbell is officially off. Late last night, Guzman was forced to go to the hospital after suffering from dehydration and coughing up blood. After coming in 3.5 pounds over the 135-pound limit, Guzman was given two hours to make the weight, but opted not to, instead returning to his hotel room. Hours later, Guzman was taken to the hospital for observation after coughing up blood. Due to the seriousness of the situation, the fight with Campbell has been called off." Terrible situation for both fighters. God damn, Guzman is unlucky.. |

Hopefully the promoters can reschedule it for later in the year. If not, I fail to see how Guzman is going to secure a big fight with bigger money makers like Pacquiao, Marquez, Casamayor, Diaz, and now Barrera all at 135 pounds.

Anyone know what happens financially in these types of situations? Would Guzman need to give something to Campbell as a penalty? |

It really fucking sucks for Nate Campbell.. he was obviously so amped for this fight and couldn't wait to get in the ring. He was in Diaz-fight mode. I wouldn't blame him if he decided to find a different opponent. If he does sign another fight with Guzman, there should be a huge penalty for Guzman's team if he doesn't make the weight or even if he pulls out of the fight for any reason. The last thing Campbell needs is someone slowing his career down at his age.
